Kawasaki Reveals Heavily Updated 2026 KX250

Published on December 17th, 2025 by

Kawasaki has unveiled its most significant KX250 update in six years, addressing long-standing criticisms about the model's competitiveness against more recently developed rivals. The 2026 version receives a new frame, revised engine internals, and updated Showa suspension calibrated specifically for the changed chassis characteristics. The company acknowledges the KX250 had fallen behind competitors in recent seasons, with both its AMA Supercross and MXGP programmes struggling against the dominant European machinery.

The new aluminium perimeter frame trades approximately one kilogram of weight for increased rigidity in targeted areas. Kawasaki engineers spent considerable time with factory riders developing flex characteristics that improve cornering feedback without sacrificing the compliant feel that made previous KX250 generations popular with amateur riders. The subframe is now bolt-on rather than welded, simplifying crash repairs and allowing future geometry adjustments. Overall weight drops to 104 kilograms, competitive with the lightest bikes in the class.

Engine changes focus on mid-range delivery rather than peak power, responding to feedback that the previous motor made its power too abruptly. Revised cam timing, new piston design with altered compression ratio, and updated fuel injection mapping together create what Kawasaki describes as "accessible performance"—strong enough for professional competition while manageable for developing riders. The electric starter system has been lightened and repositioned lower in the chassis to centralise mass.

Australian pricing is set at $13,999, positioning the KX250 competitively against the Honda CRF250R and Yamaha YZ250F while undercutting European competition. Availability begins February 2026, with Kawasaki promising improved initial allocation following stock shortages that frustrated dealers in previous model launches.
